Description
In this course, students will learn the basics of working with young children in early childcare settings. The units are designed to utilize class discussion and project-based learning.
Students will begin to explore the world of Early Childhood and the career possibilities it includes. They will check their own strengths compared to those required for careers in ECE. Students will also be exposed to employment basics that could be used in other courses as well.
In this unit, students will dive into how young children learn, how to work with them effectively and how to set up the space for both child and adult success.
In this unit, students will learn about various issues that can come up when working in the ECE setting. They will have a better understanding of disabilities, the impact of technology and where/who can provide services for children who need extra support.
This unit explores the elements of how children learn, emphasizing the significance of play in their development. Students will engage in activities designed to promote various aspects of growth, including physical, intellectual, emotional, and social skills. A key focus will be on kindergarten readiness, including strategies to support children as they transition into formal education. Additionally, the unit explores the benefits of reading during the early years. Students will create activities that integrate these concepts, fostering an enriching environment that nurtures young learners' growth and curiosity.
This unit focuses on the importance of health and safety in childcare environments. It covers essential regulations designed to protect both children and staff, emphasizing the creation of safe spaces that enhance learning and well-being. Key topics include staff-to-child ratios, emergency procedures, food safety, and proper hygiene practices. Students will engage in hands-on activities and discussions, such as identifying potential hazards at a child's eye level and creating informative materials about handwashing. By the end of the unit, participants will understand their role as positive role models in promoting health and safety in childcare settings.
In this unit, students will apply their knowledge from the Foundations to Early Childhood course to create a comprehensive daycare project. Imagining they have just graduated high school, students will embark on the journey of starting their own daycare business. This project involves critical decision-making, such as choosing a name, designing a floor plan, creating a logo, and drafting promotional materials. To facilitate the learning process, the project will be divided into manageable parts, ensuring students remain engaged and informed throughout. The final project will culminate in a poster presentation that showcases all aspects of their daycare design.
